The Clerk of Court’s office is the repository for all documents filed in Family Court, Juvenile Court, the Court of Common Pleas and the Court of General Sessions on the state circuit court level. Any action initiated in any of these courts, as well as all subsequent pleadings, must be filed with the Clerk of Court’s office, where they are maintained for perpetuity. Copies of any record (except those statutorily exempt from public inspection or those sealed by the court) are public record and can be reviewed in person and copies obtained for a fee of $.50 per page.
In conjunction with Family Court, the Clerk of Court is also responsible for the collection, disbursement and enforcement of child support and alimony. Due to the volume of calls, we are unable to disseminate payment information over the phone, however, we anticipate automated phone access to payment information in the near future. Criminal warrants for General Sessions Court are maintained in the Clerk of Court’s office. All bond information, hearing requests, etc. are maintained as part of the case file. The selection of Petit jurors for Common Pleas and Criminal Court is the responsibility of the Clerk of Court’s office, as well as the Grand Jury in criminal court. Petit jurors serve only for the term selected, usually one week, however, Grand Jurors can serve up to two years.
The Clerk of Court also serves as the Register of Deeds in Laurens County. Deeds, mortgages, plats and any other document affecting title to real property is recorded in the Clerk of Court/Register of Deeds office. Judgments and state and federal tax liens are filed in this office. In addition, the Clerk maintains records of military discharges.
