General Statement of Job

Under general supervision, performs the skilled maintenance and repair of fire apparatus and support vehicles for the County’s volunteer fire departments.  Work involves ensuring the safety of County staff and volunteers through the proper maintenance of vehicles and equipment, fabricating parts as needed, maintaining accurate work records, and performing related work as assigned.  Reports to the Director of Fire Services.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on fire apparatus, support vehicles, and related equipment.
  • Evaluates driver reports of mechanical malfunctions.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical and electrical malfunctions; adjusts, removes and/or replaces parts and components. 
  • Performs field repairs as needed; responds to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Fabricates and installs special features on vehicles and equipment as requested.
  • Performs all work in accordance with department and County policies and procedures, mechanical standards, and standards of quality and safety.
  • Determines parts and supply needs and orders as required; stocks shop tools, parts, and supplies.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly and safe working environment.
  • Maintains accurate and complete maintenance and repair records as required.
  • Receives and/or reviews work orders and instructions from the supervisor.
  • Prepares and/or processes work orders, service records, and related records and reports. 
  • Refers to service manuals, parts manuals, safety manuals, policy and procedure manuals, etc.
  • Operates various types of vehicles, fire engines, and other fire service vehicles, fire apparatus, automotive shop equipment, welding equipment, cutting torch; operates a variety of office equipment such as a telephone, mobile radio, computer, copier, etc.; uses mechanic’s tools, meters, gauges, testing devices, etc.; uses automotive parts, hardware, fuel, lubricants, cleaning solutions; uses general office supplies.
  •  Interacts and communicates with the supervisor, other County employees, repair service providers, vendors, and the general public.
  • Attends training, workshops, and seminars as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills.
Minimum Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by four to five years of experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and light/heavy equipment, including some experience working on emergency response vehicles; or any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
