Public Works


The Laurens County Department of Public Works is a multi-function department that is considered the “hub” of various other county maintenance departments. Under the direction of the Public Works Director, the following Departments, with their respective Supervisors, work hand in hand towards many public services.

Laurens County does not have an Engineering Department per say. All engineering and administrative assignments of complex natures are assigned to the Public Works Department. The Public Works Department is basically responsible for the preparation of technical specifications for public improvements and the inspection of work on public road construction projects. The Public Works Department also interprets county subdivision regulations and assists in the review of preliminary and final plans submitted by developers.

Laurens County Buildings and Grounds This department oversees all county owned buildings and grounds and is physically located on Mount Vernon Church Road. This department presently employees ten (10) individuals to oversee the building and ground upkeep and maintenance.

Laurens County Landfill The Solid Waste Division serves the needs of the County for the disposal of household garbage and for the recycling of various products. This department section operates a Construction and Demolition Debris landfill located on Landfill Road just off the 127 By-Pass west of Laurens. The normal hours of operation for the landfill are Monday to Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. All loads delivered to the landfill must be received and unloaded at least 15 minutes before the posted closing times. A list of acceptable wastes for disposal and unacceptable wasted is posted within this web site. This department section currently employs seven (7) dedicated individuals.

Laurens County Rural Collections – The Rural Collections Division is another division of the Landfill.  This division only involves the rural collection sites that are located in several defined box site areas of the County.  These Boxsites will take in normal household garbage and several recycling options.  The normal business hours are: Monday thru Friday 7:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.   Saturday 8:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. and Sundays from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.

Laurens County Roads and Bridges This Department has a very vital and critical role in the maintenance and construction of county roads, bridges and drainage structures. The County’s road system consists of approximately 800 miles of roads of which approximately 600 miles are paved roads and 200 miles are gravel roads. Maintenance for this road system is accomplished through the dedicated efforts of fifteen (15) full time and three (3) part time individuals.

Laurens County Litter / Humane Office This Department is a sub-section of the Rural Collection section and serves the citizens with a two-fold purpose – one being litter and the other being animal control. This is a four (4) employee department that involves all of the “unincorporated areas” of the County. The Officers are assigned different areas of the County and on a daily basis the officers report to the Public Works Department. The main duties of this department is to respond to animal related and public litter calls. The Officers conduct investigations of cruelty and other problem situations.
